| Michael Coyne and Fred Birchenough spoke to a small but attentive audience at a meeting of the New England Chapter on Friday April 30. Along with a presentation of several previous climbing and diving expeditions, they shared their recent flag trip to Bolivia with many slides and stories recounting their adventures. They planned to explore sunken Incan or pre-Incan ruins in Lake Titicaca, but due to chaos in the streets of LaPaz, they were unable to do so. They did, however, set a world's record for the highest altitude scuba dive from a kayak. Not resting on their laurels, they climbed Mt. Chacaltaya and descended using ski boards, a new type of short, lightweight ski, setting another world record in the process. Mt. Chacaltaya turned out to be just a warm up for their conquest of the highest peak in Bolivia, Volcan Sajama. Although they did not set any records, they overcame altitude problems and achieved the summit of this 20,000 plus foot peak. The expedition was followed on a day-to-day basis in the Expedition News section and a complete report can be found by visiting Expedition Reports. |
