| On Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at the Union Club, our Chapter Chairman, Greg Deyermenjian spoke to the assembled masses of Explorers Club members and guests and shared his explorations in the high altitude jungle of Peru in search for the last refuge of the Inca, Paititi.
Greg showed slides and videos from several of his expeditions to Peru and summarized the current understanding (or lack thereof) of the location of Paititi. We were all treated to a very personal account of Greg's trips since 1984 including the unexpected difficulties that are a part of every expedition. We traveled with Greg up the Río PiñiPiñi, the Rio Nistrón and the Rio Choritiari by boat and on foot to the location given in a recent book by Padre Juan Polentini. Their searches of the area turned up no evidence of ancient habitation, putting to rest Fr. Polentini's claim, and bringing to a close the potential for major finds in that particular area. We came to know the members of this expedition; Paulino and Ignacio, Juan (the boatman) and two Italian explorers, Marco and Alessandro, and heard stories of the Machiguenga and an exciting account of an encounter with the little known Kugapacori natives who visited their camp. You can learn more about Greg;s exlorations in search of Paititi by visiting his website (http://www.paititi.com). |
