| The evening of April 28th; author Kenn Harper; the Union Club in downtown Boston; and 70-plus members, guests, and friends of the New England Chapter: all this combined to make for a uniquely splendid experience, as Kenn gave his talk-with-slides on "Minik, the New York Eskimo." The tale of the young Eskimo boy, into his years as a young man, was masterfully told by one who has himself lived for 30 years in the Arctic, and has fully immersed himself into the experience and joys and travails of those who are native to the high latitudes of Greenland and Canada. The absolutely rapt attention that was given by all within the room was even superseded by the emotionally moving experience, deep within, that attended one's taking in such a story of love, despair, bravery, and self-serving wickedness, as the famous Arctic explorer destroys the lives--but not, in the end, the dignity--of the small group of Polar Eskimos he was duty bound to protect. Kenn's book, "Give Me My Father's Body," published by Steerforth Press, tells the whole tale, and is highly recommended. |
