| In 1798 Thomas Malthus wrote, “Population, when unchecked, increases in a geometrical ratio. Subsistence increases only in an arithmetical ratio.” Our next speaker, Steven LeBlanc, will discuss the interplay of unchecked population growth, ecological behavior and warfare over the last six million years. Dr. LeBlanc is Harvard Professor of Archaeology and Curator and Director of Collections at the Peabody Museum and has been pondering and researching the idea of ‘the noble savage in ecological balance with his environment’ for over twenty five years. His recently published, and likely to be controversial, book Constant Battles (St, Martins Press), explodes the myth that warfare and environmental destruction were the recent product of complex western societies who spread these two plagues throughout the world. He produces a compelling argument that warfare was a “constant battle over scarce resources throughout the ages.” His talk and book signing promises to be a lively one and I personally look forward to his answering questions from our ever-passionate audience. Once again, this Wednesday May 28th evening event will be held at The Harvard Faculty Club in Harvard Square, Cambridge, courtesy of New England Chapter (and HFC) member David Agee. Please see below additional information regarding parking and directions. The Harvard Faculty Club is not to be confused with The Harvard Club. |
