| Dear Explorers and Friends: Our next New England Chapter program will take place on Thursday, December 4th, when we are honored to host Dr. Paul Mayewski, Explorer and Scientist. Paul is the Director of The Institute for Quaternary and Climate Studies and a Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Maine in Orono and has led more than 40 scientific expeditions to the Arctic, the Antarctic, the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, he received his Ph.D from the Institute of Polar Studies at Ohio State. He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, a Fellow and citation winner in the Explorers Club, and a current or past member of a number of distinguished international committees, including the Academy of Sciences, the International Geosphere Biosphere Program and the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research. He has published over 220 papers in peer-reviewed journals such as Science, Nature, and the Journal of Geophysical Research. His papers have been instrumental in understanding the occurrence and impact of natural and man-made phenomena on climate, and cover such diverse topics as acid rain, ozone holes, nuclear accident fall-out, volcanic activity, and sea ice extent. In March 2002, Paul, with co-author Frank White, published a book for popular audiences, The Ice Chronicles, that captures the adventure of scientific research in remote reaches of the Earth and describes important new breakthroughs in the understanding of climate change resulting from this research. His expeditionary and scientific achievements have been featured by numerous media venues including Discover, Harper's Magazine, the Boston Globe, Popular Science, Archeology Magazine, Good Morning America, NOVA, and BBC. In keeping with our initiative to diversify our presentation settings, this Thursday, December 4th, evening event will be held at a new location, the Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel, overlooking the Charles river and adjacent to the Harvard Business School.
