The New England
Chapter of
The Explorers Club
"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all"

--HELEN KELLER

On Monday, January 25, 2010
The New England Chapter of the
Eplorers Club will show a Preview Screening
of the New Film
NORTH FACE
Dear members, guests, and friends of the New England Chapter of The Explorers Club:

You are invited to an exclusive advance screening of the brand new climbing adventure film, NORTH FACE, which will be playing at the Kendall Square Cinema in Cambridge, Massachusetts, February 12th - 18th.

Our explorers' "sneak screening" will be held on MONDAY, 25 JANUARY 2010, at the DOUBLE TREE GUEST SUITES HOTEL on Soldiers Field Road in Boston, where we have most of our meetings. The film will open in theaters in New York city on January 29th.

I have been privileged to see the film already, as part of the process of assessing it for our January meeting. In my opinion, it is the real deal: excellently done, realistic, moving; a film that I am quite proud and grateful that our Chapter will be hosting. One write-up of the film tells us the following:

"NORTH FACE tells the story of Tony Kurz and Andi Hinterstoisser's dramatic attempt to scale the Eiger north face in 1936. It is a dramatic feature, but the climbing segments are shot realistically and really put the audience on the edge of their seats."

***Playing in Boston FRIDAY, February 12th – THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 18th***

NORTH FACE

Based on a true story, NORTH FACE tells the breathtaking story of two Bavarian climbers who attempted to scale the Eiger North Face for the first time. It’s 1936, and Nazi propaganda urges German Alpinists to conquer the unclimbed north face of the Swiss massif – aka “Murder Wall” – before the Olympic Games take place. The legendary 1800-meter-high wall of stone and ice has been casting its spell for decades, and two young hot-shot climbers, Toni Kurz (BENNO FÜRMANN) and Andi Hinterstoisser (FLORIAN LUKAS), are finally lured into the challenge. Preparing at the foot of the mountain, they cross paths with Toni’s childhood love, Luise (JOHANNA WOKALEK), who is reporting on the first ascent for a Berlin newspaper. Tensions rise as personal drama blends with the seduction of the dangerous feat.

Beginning their ascent, the German rope team initially makes good headway, followed closely by two Austrians. But after that auspicious start, the climbers lose their advantage over the mountain, and the race against time and the forces of nature begins. Realistically shot, NORTH FACE reveals the brutal struggle to survive on the mountain. Director/screenwriter Philipp Stölzl keeps viewers as breathless as if they were climbing the mountain themselves, rather than sitting comfortably in a theatre.

Few people may remember the story of Toni Kurz and Andi Hinterstoisser directly, but many will find their own reflection in these characters – not only Alpinists and nature lovers, but all who are still searching for their path in life.
