Dear Explorer and Friends:

As we ring in the holiday season, please join us for another meeting of the New England Chapter of The Explorers Club, to be held on Thursday, December 13th. We are pleased to welcome back Chapter Officer and Webmaster Rex Passion. Last year Rex conducted a flag-bearing expedition to survey ancient Anasazi caves in Utah, and has conducted several similar expeditions to map the flank margin caves of Isla de la Mona off the coast of Puerto Rico. His core interest, however, remains ocean biology and zoology. Rex has studied the Northern Elephant Seal, the subject of his last presentation, and this time will introduce us to the world of the top-notch predator in the ocean, the great white shark. He will discuss three studies that begin to tease apart the danse macabre of sharks and elephant seals and tell some firsthand stories of the excitement of attracting toothy predators as large as your boat. Be warned that there will be some gruesome scenes from the realm of nature, but, in the end, the talk is as much about how seals avoid being eaten as it is about how sharks go about catching them. There will, hopefully, also be startling information, hot off the press about the unexpected wanderings of these magnificent beasts.

Yours very truly,

Mark Allio, Program Chairman
