"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all"

| The Cambridge Center and the New England Explorers Club collaborate to honor spectacular human achievements, welcoming naturalist and explorer Robert Perkins who will screen and discuss the third film in a three-part WGBH series on his explorations. Shot in 2002 in Southern Africa, Robert Perkins' film, The Crocodile River, explores how crossing international borders and emotional boundaries enables two people of vastly different cultures one American and one African to find common ground. Perkins embarks on a ten-week, 1,000-mile exploration of the fabled Limpopo River in southern Africa with Bongus Lunga, a Zimbabwean man who had never left his small village on the shores of Lake Cariba. Both travelers make unique discoveries about the river, its region, its people and each other. The result is a remarkable tale of friendship and human connection amidst political and economic suffering. The screening coincides with WGBH's premiere of One Man's Journey, a three-part series covering Perkins' life: as a young man creating his own identity on a long, solo canoe trip (Into the Great Solitude, 1987, airing on Ch. 2, Jan. 13); as a middle-aged man, struggling to survive his partner's breast cancer (Talking to Angels, 1993, airing on Ch. 2, Jan. 20); and as a wiser man connecting more deeply with others through his African Journey (The Crocodile River, 2003, airing on Ch. 2, Jan. 27). Be the first to view The Crocodile River and enjoy this opportunity to meet Robert Perkins in person and be inspired by his adventures and insights. Rob's presentation will be on Tuesday, January 18th at 8:00 p.m. at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education, 56 Brattle St, Cambridge, in Harvard Square. There is a $10.00 charge for this event. |
