The New England
Chapter of
The Explorers Club
"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all"

--HELEN KELLER

ON FRIDAY, JUNE 25, 2010, Dr. HELLE VALBORG GOLDMAN WILL TALK ABOUT LEOPARDS, WITCHCRAFT, ARCTIC POLLUTANTS and FRIDTJOF NANSEN
Dear New England Chapter Explorers,

You and your guests are invited to the June 25th 2010 Meeting of the New England Chapter of The Explorers Club. That evening's speaker, Dr. Helle Goldman, has considerable professional and personal experience in Africa as well as the Arctic.

While living in a traditional mud-and-wattle hut, Dr. Goldman has done ethnographic work on the East African island of Pemba, and she subsequently carried out research on monkeys and leopards. Likewise, she and her husband have camera-trapped previously unphotographed nocturnal carnivores in the forests of Zanzibar. Several of Dr. Goldman's papers concern the Zanzibar leopard and its perceived local association with witchcraft. She owns a piece of untamed land in the Okavanga Delta, Botswana, to which she will retire with her family if she wins the lottery.

Since 1997, Dr. Helle Goldman has been a scientific editor for the Norwegian Polar Institute, and, in addition to describing some of her work in Africa, her presentation will delve into the Institute's recent work in the Arctic and Antarctic, and how this research is helping us understand climate change. She will also discuss recent research into the tragic effects of environmental contaminants in the Arctic...contaminants that, for example, have resulted in abnormal genitalia in female polar bears. And, finally, she will mention plans for celebrating two anniversaries in the lives of polar explorers Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen, Norway's most prominent national heroes.

Please don't miss this event!
